Welcome to this week’s roundup of my world.
Happy Spring week to all of you! Our official Spring started 1 September. At school we grabbed the opportunity to shed trousers after the winter. And it was usually the coldest day of the winter!
Okay, drama queen here.
Seriously though, it was usually so cold that I walked around with blue legs!
I don’t know if it’s midlife, but the Spring days are quite moderate now. I still grab my coat in the morning. Mind you, we are leaving at 6 for work in the morning and get back home at 6, which can be quite chilli.
There’s been writing progress, and editing progress and other author business progress. But nothing I can think of right at this moment! Lol!
Well, let’s get into this week’s newsletter.

Quote that’s stayed with me this week
There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.
Douglas Everet
I fell into this rabbit hole this week
I watched an author this week who uses pen names.
The rule is simple: different genre, different pen name.
But this author had a different point. She has a ‘f*%k it’ pen name. Her words, not mine. Everything that is not in line with her current genres are published under this pen name. She’s incredibly prolific!
I’m considering this for a simple reason: some stories I want to explore is not sweet or cozy.
This author said that she sometimes just let the hair down and write whatever she wants to, for creative purposes. All of her books are romance and cozies but some are darker and spicier, which doesn’t fit into her main author name. It makes me think of ballerinas who benefit from other dancing styles. It’s good for the body and the soul, not to mention the relaxing and building it does in surprising places of the body.
Back to the pen name idea. It appeals to me because fantasy, mostly grim dark, and gothic fiction, are much darker and less innocent than the sweet romances and cozy mysteries I’m currently writing.
There’s also courses I would like to take for writing hard core crime fiction and I don’t see myself publish those under Anne C. West.
But let’s see. For now, there’s a few cozies to finish ASAP.
This made me smile this week
We should always learn from history and celebrate how far we’ve come – this week in history, this caught my eye
30 August 1797 Frankenstein author Mary Shelley (died 1 February 1851) was born in London AND ALSO Frankenstein Day
31 August 1870 Maria Montessori, Italian physician, educator, is born
1 September 1943 Steven Pressfield, American author of historical fiction, military fiction, non-fiction, and screenplays, is born
2 September 1752 The British ended their use of the Julian calendar, switching instead to the Gregorian calendar, resulting in a major adjustment as Wednesday, September 2, was followed by Thursday, September 14. The correction resulted in rioting by people who felt cheated and demanded the missing eleven days back.
3 September 1833 The New York Sun newspaper first appeared, marking the beginning of the ‘penny press,’ inexpensive newspapers sold on sidewalks by newspaper boys. The paper focused on human interest stories and sensationalism and by 1836 was the largest seller in America with a circulation of 30,000.
4 September 1824 Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (died 1896) was born in Ansfelden, Austria. Best known for his monumental ten symphonies.
5 September 1911 Sir Abe Bailey, Rand mine magnate and politician, marries Mary Westenra, pioneer aviatrix
That’s it for this week. Thank you for reading, and I will be back here next week.
