This short story follows the life of a young widow named Joan as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her husband and the challenges of being a single mother in a small Karoo town. Joan is forced to sell all of their belongings and take a job at the local bank to make ends meet. As she goes about her daily routine, Joan reflects on her memories with her husband, John, and tries to navigate her new reality. Despite the well-meaning encouragement of others to find a new love and move on, Joan can’t let go of her love for John and the life they had together. This touching and poignant story explores themes of grief, loss, and the complexities of love and relationships.
